The gentleman in the house, Gerhard from Germany is a scientist who is also an associate professor of Earth sciences and working with GIS, remote sensing and maps. Runs a private company with consulting work while he is attached to Blekinge Institute of Technology. Gerhard holds a Ph.D. in geology and paleontology from the University of Marburg, Germany. Nature, the earth and the origin of mountains are the driving forces in Gerhard’s work. His interests are technology, inventions and solutions of technical problems as well as foreign cultures. Gerhard is a research leader with a focus on developing countries and postgraduate education in Uganda.
The lady of the house, Teddy Madeleine (Teddy is a nickname – Christian name is Madeleine) – to the profession photographer and cinematographer educated at the Dramatic Institute, Swedish Film Institute. She has worked as a journalist and photographer, television and radio and most recently as TV-producer in Stockholm before moving to the farm in By. Private interests are architecture, nature and gardening.
The animals on the farm:
The male cat Tarzan, a black and white striped cat born in the province of Värmland. Missan, a red affectionate cat lady, who loves to roam the farm’s land.
Horses: Trollvärstan, Åbyjäntan and Tandsten from Möklinta – three kind North Swedish horses who retired from the racetrack.
Host family background:
The family came to the village for the first time when they acquired a summer house (Björka) close to the present farm, with a view over Dalälven and next to the riding stables in By.
The family had no previous contacts in the district while living and working in Stockholm. But nice neighbors in the village and an active village community in the parish was reason enough for a permanent move when the family a few years later, in 2009, found this country estate called Jäderholms. The single adult daughter came with at first, but has now moved back to Stockholm for studies.
At the time of the move there was a strong desire in the family for a fresh start in life. Teddy saw an opportunity to open the farm for accommodation and activities and try a different lifestyle than in the big city. Gerhard had his own business in consulting over the Internet and moved his office from the capital to the countryside.
